Couples Therapy & Chronic Illness Support, Because the Work Is Specific
When what you're carrying is specific, you need someone who already knows the terrain. Virtual therapy across California.
"My husband and I were about to get a divorce. I can truly say if it wasn't for the different skills taught to us; as well as helping us with understanding each other and healing, we would have divorced. The other years that we saw her it was really helpful to reinforce what she had taught us and we also learned new techniques. To this day Lisa's advice comes up in my husband's and my heated and nonheated conversations and we now have the skills to work things out. I will always be grateful that she accepted us and her help saved our marriage."
Anonymous client, Couples Therapy"She was a constant support while I navigated 20+ chronic conditions, and without her, I truly don't know how I would have gotten through some of the darkest times of my life. Lisa didn't just help me cope with my illnesses; she taught me how to speak to myself with kindness, how to navigate tough doctor's appointments and medical procedures, and how to heal from the trauma I had experienced within the medical system. She helped me reconnect with myself and start trusting my body and my instincts again. Through her guidance, I learned the power of my voice and how to advocate for myself, something I had lost along the way. I was able to find myself again outside of my chronic illnesses and begin creating a life I truly love. She's not just been a therapist; she's been the most important member of my medical team. Without her, dealing with the endless obstacles and medical procedures would have been unimaginably difficult. Lisa helped me out of my lowest points, and for that, I will forever be grateful."
Anonymous client, Therapy for Chronic Illness"I am a divorce attorney. Lisa has been my own marriage counselor along with many of my clients and friends/family. Lisa is very effective and makes difficult times much easier with a very focused approach that identifies the issues and offers solutions and resources that help with whatever issues are presented without drawing the process out beyond what it requires. Lisa is very compassionate and combines years of expertise and her own experiences to assist her clients through tough times."
Anonymous client, Couples TherapyChronic Illness. Relationship Strain. Sometimes Both.
If you've ever had to explain your situation and felt like the person across from you still didn't quite get it, you're in the right place.
What brings people here isn't simple.
It's usually not one thing. It's the diagnosis that changed how your relationship works. The condition your partner carries that you can't fully share. The anxiety that arrived with the illness and never quite left. The exhaustion of explaining yourself to people who almost, but don't quite, understand.
Generic therapy has its place. But when what you're dealing with is this specific, you need someone who already knows the territory.
The diagnosis changed everything
You're still the same person. But nothing quite feels the same.
Your relationship is taking the strain
One partner is ill. Both partners are struggling. And neither of you quite knows how to say that.
The people around you don't quite get it
You've tried to explain it. They're sympathetic. But something still doesn't land.
You've been managing alone too long
You keep showing up. But the weight keeps building, and something has to give.
The anxiety about your health is its own problem
The fear of what's next is as exhausting as the condition itself.
You know something needs to change
You're not in crisis. But you're clear enough to know this can't keep going as it is.
The weight doesn't lighten on its own.
The things we're describing (chronic illness, relationship strain, the particular exhaustion of managing both) don't resolve with time. They shift. They harden. The distance that starts as tension becomes the default. The conversation you keep meaning to have becomes something neither of you brings up anymore.
The gap between you and your partner quietly grows
Isolation becomes easier than explaining yourself
What started as manageable becomes harder to reach back through
The window for getting ahead of it slowly narrows
This work gets harder the longer it waits. Not because you're doing anything wrong, but because patterns that go unaddressed long enough stop feeling like patterns and start feeling like just how things are.
What it looks like when the fit is actually right.
Most people who reach out to us have already tried to explain their situation to someone, and walked away feeling like they got close, but not quite there.
Working with a specialist changes that from the first session. You don't spend the early weeks explaining why your diagnosis affects your relationship, or what chronic illness grief actually is, or why your situation isn't just "stress." We already know the terrain. The work starts from a different place: further in.
For couples: the sessions aren't trying to adapt a generic framework to fit what you're going through. We're starting from the actual dynamic: illness in the relationship, the caregiver weight, the things neither of you has said yet. For individuals: we work at the level of the illness itself, looking at what it does to identity, to self-trust, to how you carry yourself in a body that's become unpredictable.
"I wanted to create a practice where people are truly seen and understood in their unique experiences."
Twenty years in. Two published books. One very specific focus.
Lisa Gray, LMFT founded Mosaic Counseling Group after 20 years building her practice the old-fashioned way: meeting doctors in person, connecting with medical providers, earning referrals one relationship at a time. She knows this work from the inside.
She's written two books on the intersection of illness and relationships:
- Healthy Conflict, Happy Couple: How to Let Go of Blame and Grow Stronger Together
- Thriving in a Relationship When You Have a Chronic Illness: Navigate Challenges & Keep Your Relationship Strong Using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
She built Mosaic as the practice she wished existed: one where every therapist approaches the work the same way, and where the level of specialization matches what clients actually need.
Handpicked for this work.
Every associate at Mosaic was brought in with intention. We share a clinical framework, a philosophy, and a commitment to going deeper than surface-level advice. When you work with someone from our practice, you're working with a specialist trained in the specific approaches we actually use.
"I handpick these people because I believe in their skills."
We don't try to help everyone.
The practices that get the best outcomes are the ones that know their lane. We work in a narrow specialty by design, because chronic illness and couples therapy done well are each a full field on their own, and combining them with real depth is something very few practices can actually do.
We're not a fit for every situation. But if you're in the situation we specialize in, you're exactly who we're built for.
Deep in the Work
Not a generalist who sees chronic illness occasionally. This has been Lisa's clinical focus for 20 years. The team reflects that.
A Clinical Voice in Print
Two published books on chronic illness and relationships. The research that informs the practice is in writing.
Handpicked, Not Just Hired
Every associate was chosen because they practice the same way. One framework, consistent across the whole team.
Evidence-Based From the Start
ACT, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method, PACT, and CBT. We draw from each based on what your situation actually calls for, not one size fits all.
Virtual Across California
No commute. No geography barrier. If you're in California and ready to do this work, location is not the obstacle.
400+ Media Features
Lisa's clinical perspective has been cited across 400+ news outlets. The expertise extends well beyond the session room.
Specialized care. Not broad strokes.
Each area gets its own dedicated clinical focus, not a general therapy approach applied broadly, but work built specifically around what you're dealing with.

FAQ
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If what you're carrying is getting in the way of how you want to show up (in your relationships, your work, your sense of yourself), that's usually enough to go on. You don't need to be in crisis. Most people who do well in therapy aren't. They're just clear enough to know something needs to change.
What's the difference between talking to a therapist and talking to a friend?
A friend who loves you wants to make you feel better. A therapist's job is to help you see what's actually going on, even when that's uncomfortable. Good therapy isn't primarily about validation. It's skilled, honest attention to the patterns that are keeping you stuck.
Do you take insurance?
We are a cash-pay practice. We don't bill insurance directly, but we can provide documentation you may be able to submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Check with your provider about your specific benefits. Sessions are $130–$190.
Can I work with Lisa directly, or will I be working with one of her associates?
Both options exist. Lisa maintains a limited caseload. More often, we'll match you with one of our associates, each of whom was specifically chosen because they practice at the same level and use the same clinical framework. You're not getting a lesser version of the work.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
That's a fair concern, and we hear it often. The most common reason therapy doesn't work is a mismatch: wrong approach, wrong fit, wrong level of specialization for what someone is actually dealing with. If chronic illness or relationship dynamics are central to what you're working through, working with a practice that knows this area deeply is a different experience.
